Fall is one of the best times of the year to fish. The water is lower, clearer and there is less activity on the river. There is still time to book a trip with a commercial outfitters.
According to Andrew Petersen, the Colorado Angler and a member of the Arkansas River Outfitters Association, "This year's fall flows are ideal for float fishing on the Arkansas. Fish are well dispersed throughout the entire river, there continues to be strong hatches of aquatic insects, as well as excellent terrestrial insects such as grasshoppers and ants. Also during this time of year, with lower number of rafters on the river, the entire river from Buena Vista down to Texas Creek is great for anglers."

Brown trout nosed to the surface of the Arkansas River in the hazy shadow of 14,433-foot Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest peak. Swallows swooped above the sprawling Hayden Meadows to gobble up the same caddis and green drake mayflies alternating between wind and water.

Visitor numbers rebound strongly for Royal Gorge

CANON CITY — Royal Gorge area tourism is rising out of the ashes thanks to the full reopening of Canon City's number one tourist attraction and some good water levels for rafting on the Arkansas River.
A June 2013 wildfire destroyed 90 percent of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park amenities and forced the tourist attraction to lose nearly two full summers of income while demolition and rebuilding took place.
This summer, visitors are flocking back in greater numbers than before the fire.
